Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Emil has always had a passion for art and a talent for design, lighting, and color; after realizing over 15 set and costume designs for theatrical performances in Bulgaria and France with an M.F.A. in Scenic and Costume Design, Emil found his calling in Entertainment Design and Animation and moved to Los Angeles. As he progressed in his career, his jobs evolved with his talent, from Background Designer, Visual Development Artist, Head of Location Design, Art Director and Production Designer at DreamWorks Animation, Senior Animation Visual Development Artist at The Walt Disney Studio, Senior Visual Development Artist at Sony Picture Animation, Art Director at Warner Animation Group and Production Designer on a Feature Animated film at Skydance Animation.

On Netflix, he just completed Art Directing, the adult action adventure show Blue Eye Samurai.

He is currently on an unannounced feature film at Warner Bros Picture Animation (WBPA).

 Before that, Emil worked at Skydance, DreamWorks, Walt Disney Studios, and Warner Bros. Feature Animation to produce some of the most iconic animated films such as The Iron Giant, Marry Poppins Returns, SCOOB!, Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Rise of the Guardians, Puss in Boots, Treasure Planet, Curious George, and The Ren & Stimpy Show.

 

He is 2024 Annie Award winner for Best Production Design - TV/Media for the critically acclaimed show Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix Series.

Several publications and award shows have recognized his work. In 2016, he was nominated for an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in

Production Design for the DreamWorks Feature Film Home.

 

Emil maintains an active role in the artist community by teaching and mentoring young artists at the Art Center College of Design and participating in Design workshops hosted in Shanghai, Madrid, and Los Angeles. 

 

With twenty years in the industry, he continues to strive to break new ground in animation and design, seamlessly blending design, lighting, and color, building new worlds to excite the eyes and minds.
